Take Time Out to Listen to Yourself

L V Dunmore

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a therapeutic relationship which provides you with an opportunity to share your problems or concerns with someone who is skilled and has the time and objectivity to listen without judging, giving advice or becoming involved.

It is unlike any other relationship in that all it asks of you is to be yourself and in return be truly accepted for who you are whilst working together to help you reach your full potential. Deciding to come to counselling can be very difficult for some people, especially if you are someone who does not like asking for help and sees it as a sign of weakness. It is quite the opposite and shows that you value yourself even when you may not feel it. You may find that sometimes it’s difficult to talk to friends and family as they are emotionally involved and may be part of the problem.

How Can Counselling Help?

People seek counselling for many reasons. There are times in most people’s life when they are worried, depressed, anxious and sometime feel they can’t cope or don’t know which way to turn. People may feel sad, hurt or angry, even overwhelmed by the things that have happened to them in the past, painful or difficult situations in the present or anxiety about the future. Other people come for counselling as a way of finding and developing their strengths and learning how to get the most out of life. Counselling gives you the opportunity to make sense of things, gain a different perspective and develop a deeper awareness of self and understanding of your problems.
